How to start a dental clinic in Nigeria: the steps, in order

The steps to open a dental clinic in Lagos or Abuja, in order: scope, CAC, premises, a licensed dentist in charge, registered equipment, facility registration and first patients.

How to start a dental clinic in Nigeria comes down to eight steps, in this order: settle your scope, register the business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), find premises that can carry dental services, put a licensed operating officer in charge, buy registered equipment, register the facility, staff the front desk, then line up your first patients. In Lagos the facility regulator is HEFAMAA. In Abuja it sits within the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Step 1: Decide exactly what you are opening

Write down the services before anything else. General dentistry, orthodontics, implants and cosmetic work each need different rooms, equipment and people.

  • Services. Which treatments you will offer from day one, and which come later.
  • Surgeries. How many treatment rooms you need at opening.
  • Imaging. Whether you will take X-rays on site or refer out.

In Lagos, your application letter to HEFAMAA states your location and scope of service, so this decision is on paper from the start. If you plan admissions or several specialties, read our steps to start a private hospital in Nigeria as well.

Step 2: Register the business with CAC

The CAC offers three kinds of registration: Company Registration, Business Name and Incorporated Trustees. You start online from the CAC website.

Choose the structure with your lawyer or accountant. Keep the certificate and registration number ready, because the facility registration comes after it.

Step 3: Find premises that can carry dental work

HEFAMAA says its preference is a purpose-built building for a health facility. Where that isn't possible, it expects adequate consideration for the safety of patients, staff and other residents, with strong infection control and waste management (HEFAMAA FAQs).

A dental surgery adds its own demands. Each treatment room needs power, compressed air, suction, water and a drain, planned before the floor is finished. Walk the space with your dentist and an equipment engineer before you sign.

Step 4: Put a licensed dentist in charge

You don't have to be a dentist to own the clinic in Lagos. HEFAMAA allows a non-medical owner as long as the operating officer is a qualified medical practitioner with updated licences. That officer signs a bond with the agency. HEFAMAA's FAQ also asks for at least five years' post-graduation experience, with regular licence renewal.

Dentists in Nigeria are registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Check every dentist's current practising licence yourself before their first shift. Do the same for nurses and any other licensed staff, with their own councils.

Step 5: Buy registered dental equipment

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) registers medical devices, including in vitro diagnostics. Its medical devices division processes applications for imported and locally manufactured devices, submitted through the NAPAMS portal (NAFDAC: Vaccines, Biologics and Medical Devices Directorate).

Ask every supplier for proof of registration before you pay. The dental chair is the biggest single decision, so use our dental chair buying checklist before you sign for one.

Step 6: Register the facility before you open

In Lagos: HEFAMAA

From HEFAMAA's FAQ, the process runs like this:

  1. Write an application letter to the Honourable Commissioner, stating your location and scope of service.
  2. Visit the agency two weeks after you submit the letter. HEFAMAA says this visit is mandatory.
  3. Pass one inspection before final registration.
  4. Expect monitoring visits twice a year after you are registered.
  5. Renew every year between January 1st and March 31st.

Dental clinics are on HEFAMAA's list of facilities that face a ₦100,000 fine when found operating unregistered. Our HEFAMAA registration walkthrough covers the documents.

In Abuja: FCTA

The FCTA's Health and Human Services Secretariat lists regulatory and oversight functions for all private medical service providers. Its Private Health Establishment, Monitoring & Registration Committee (PHERMC) is the unit to contact for current forms and fees.

Step 7: Staff the front desk properly

Your receptionist decides whether an enquiry becomes a booking. Patients will call, send DMs, fill forms and walk in. Each one needs a named person, a reply time and a clear way to confirm the appointment.

Write down how prices are discussed, how bookings are confirmed and who follows up on people who don't reply. Train on it before opening day.

Step 8: Line up your first patients before opening

A certificate lets you open. It doesn't fill a single booking. Start a few weeks before launch:

  1. Get found nearby. Set up your Google Business Profile so people searching for a dentist in your area see you on Google Maps.
  2. Give them a page that books. Treatments, location, hours and one clear way to book.
  3. Run a launch campaign. Local ads aimed at the treatments you most want to fill.
  4. Track bookings weekly. Enquiries in, bookings made, patients who showed up.
