Hospital bed price in Nigeria: what to check before you buy

What really moves a hospital bed quote, and what to check before you pay: bed type, features, mattress care, service and NAFDAC registration.

By the Kren Agency team ·

A hospital bed price in Nigeria depends on five things: how the bed adjusts (manual, semi-electric or fully electric), what is built in, whether the mattress is included, new or refurbished, and the service that comes with it. Two quotes that look far apart are often for different beds. Compare like with like before you compare prices.

This post shows what to check before you pay, so the beds you buy suit your patients and stay in use. For the rest of the room, see our hospital equipment list for a new clinic.

Hospital bed price in Nigeria: five things that move the quote, from bed type to mattress, condition and service
Five things decide most of what a bed costs.

Manual, semi-electric or fully electric?

This is the first thing that moves the price.

  • Manual. Back, knee and height are moved with hand cranks. Simple, with fewer parts to fail, and it still works when the power goes. It takes staff time and effort for each change.
  • Semi-electric. Usually motors for the back and knee sections, with height still on a crank. Patients can often adjust their own position with a handset.
  • Fully electric. Motors for back, knee and height. Faster for nurses moving patients in and out, and easier on backs. More parts to service, and it needs a plan for power cuts.

Which features actually matter?

Every extra function adds to the quote. Ask your nurses which ones they will use every shift.

  1. Side rails. Full or half length, how they lock, and how they fold down for care.
  2. Castors and brakes. Size, central or individual locking, and how they roll on your floors.
  3. Safe working load. The maximum weight the bed is rated for, written on the label and in the manual.
  4. Tilt positions. Some beds tilt head-down or feet-down. Ask whether your clinicians need it.
  5. Extras. IV pole sockets, removable head and foot boards, a battery back-up on electric beds.

Side rails and patient safety

Gaps between rails, mattress and bed frame matter. The US Food and Drug Administration's hospital beds page reports 901 incidents of patients caught, trapped, entangled or strangled in hospital beds between 1985 and 2013, including 531 deaths. It notes most of these patients were frail, elderly or confused.

The FDA suggests consulting the bed manufacturer and assessing each patient's needs before using a side rail. In practice, ask the supplier which mattress size the rails were designed for. A mattress that is too small or too soft can open gaps.

Mattress and infection control

Check whether the quote includes a mattress, and which one. A cheap bed with the wrong mattress is a poor buy.

The FDA warns that worn mattress covers can let fluids get trapped inside a mattress and leak out during a later patient's use, which carries a risk of infection (FDA, covers for hospital bed mattresses). Its advice to facilities:

  • Inspect covers regularly for cuts, tears, cracks, pinholes, snags or stains.
  • Remove covers from time to time and check the mattress underneath.
  • Replace a cover with stains, damage or wear right away.
  • Clean and disinfect intact covers following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Never stick needles into a mattress through its cover.

So ask the supplier which disinfectants the cover tolerates, how long it is expected to last, and whether replacement covers are stocked in Nigeria.

Warranty, service and parts

An electric bed with a dead motor and no engineer is a bed you can't use. Get these in writing:

  1. Warranty. How long, what it covers (frame, motors, handset), and what voids it.
  2. Engineers. Where they are based, and how fast they reach you in Lagos or Abuja.
  3. Parts. Which parts are stocked locally: castors, motors, handsets, rail locks.
  4. Delivery and assembly. Whether they are in the price, and who trains your nurses.

Refurbished beds can work. Ask what was replaced, test every function in front of the supplier, and buy a new mattress. For how to judge the company behind the quote, read how to choose a medical equipment supplier in Nigeria.

Is the bed registered with NAFDAC?

NAFDAC's Medical Devices and Related Products Regulations, 2024 state that medical devices shall not be manufactured, imported, exported, distributed, advertised, sold or used in Nigeria unless registered under those regulations (NAFDAC Medical Devices Regulations, 2024). "Used" includes your facility.

Ask the supplier for the NAFDAC registration details of the exact model before you pay, and keep a copy with your purchase records.

How to compare two quotes

  1. Write down the bed type and every function on each quote.
  2. Check whether the mattress, delivery and assembly are included.
  3. Compare warranty length and what it covers.
  4. Ask each supplier the same questions on engineers and parts.
  5. Confirm NAFDAC registration for each model.

Only then compare the totals.

Beds in place. Now fill them.

Beds set how many patients you can admit. They don't bring those patients in. That comes from being found on Google, answering every enquiry fast and confirming every appointment.

Questions clinic owners ask about hospital bed prices

Why do hospital bed quotes in Nigeria vary so much?

Quotes often describe different beds. Bed type, number of functions, side rails, castors, the mattress, new or refurbished condition, delivery, warranty and local service all change the price. Compare those first.

Is a manual hospital bed good enough?

For many wards, yes. Manual beds have fewer parts and keep working during power cuts. Electric beds save nursing time and effort where patients need frequent repositioning.

Does a hospital bed need NAFDAC registration?

NAFDAC's 2024 medical device regulations say devices shall not be imported, sold or used in Nigeria unless registered. Ask the supplier for the registration details of the exact model.

How often should hospital bed mattress covers be checked?

The FDA advises regular inspection for cuts, tears, pinholes or stains, removing covers periodically to check the mattress underneath, and replacing damaged covers right away.
