Social media ads for clinics: Meta, TikTok or Google?

Where Google, Meta and TikTok each fit for a clinic, the health ad rules on each channel, and the order to test them in so ads end in bookings.

By the Kren Agency team ·

Social media ads for clinics bring bookings when each channel does the job it suits. Google catches patients already searching for a treatment near them. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok put your clinic in front of people who were not looking yet, so those ads have to start the interest and then hand it to a fast reply.

Why do clinic ads get clicks and no bookings?

Most clinics pick a channel because a competitor uses it, then judge it by likes. A reel gets thousands of views. The front desk sees three messages, and nobody books.

The fix starts with one question: is this patient searching, or scrolling? The answer decides the channel, the ad and where the tap should land.

When should a clinic use Google ads?

Google ads follow intent. Google's own help page puts it simply: "The keywords you choose are used to show your ads to people." When someone types "dental implants Lekki" or "fertility clinic Abuja", your ad can appear at the moment they are choosing.

That makes Google the first place to spend for treatments people already know they need: implants, braces, scans, fertility consultations, physiotherapy after an injury. The ad does not have to create the need. It has to show that you are close, qualified and easy to book.

Google sits in this comparison because most clinic owners weigh all three channels for the same budget.

Where do Meta ads fit for a clinic?

Facebook and Instagram ads reach people by area, age and interest while they scroll. Nobody asked for your clinic, so the ad has to earn the stop. These social media ads suit treatments people think about for a while before acting: whitening, aligners, skin treatments, health checks, fertility consultations.

What works on Meta for clinics:

  • A doctor explaining one treatment in plain words.
  • A short walk through the clinic, so the place feels familiar before the visit.
  • A clear next step: a message, a call or a booking form.

Is TikTok worth it for a clinic?

TikTok is discovery, like Meta, with short video only. It can work for clinics with a doctor who is comfortable on camera and treatments that are easy to explain in thirty seconds.

Check the rules before you spend. TikTok's healthcare and pharmaceuticals ad policy sets rules market by market. In most markets it lists, medical institutions may advertise with proof of approval from the local regulator and an 18+ age restriction. Some markets ban clinic or cosmetic ads outright. Read the current rules for Nigeria on that page, or ask TikTok, before you build creative.

What health ad rules apply on each channel?

Each channel reviews health ads. Three rules matter most for clinics.

Meta: never imply you know the viewer's condition

Meta's personal attributes policy says ads "must not contain content that asserts or implies personal attributes", including physical or mental health. Meta's own examples: "New diabetes treatment available" is allowed. "Do you have diabetes?" is not.

Meta's health and wellness rules add that ads for cosmetic procedures must target people at least 18, and must not contain "statements of inferiority about physical appearance."

Google: no prescription drug promotion

Google's Healthcare and medicines policy restricts prescription drug terms in ads, landing pages and keywords, and does not allow speculative or experimental treatments. Name the consultation or procedure, never a prescription drug.

TikTok: approval and 18+

Expect to show proof of approval and to restrict ads to adults, as covered above.

Your profession's own advertising rules apply on top of all three: no promised results, no patient details.

Which social media ads should a clinic test first?

  1. Start with search. Run Google ads for your highest-value treatment, aimed at people near the clinic.
  2. Add one Meta campaign. One treatment, one area, one doctor-led video, sent to a landing page for that treatment or to messages someone answers within minutes.
  3. Try TikTok last, once you know a video works on Instagram and the rules allow your treatment.
  4. Count bookings, not views. Ask every new patient how they found you. Spend divided by patients who booked gives your cost per booking for each channel.
  5. Move money to the winner after a few weeks of real numbers.

Questions clinic owners ask about social media ads

Should a new clinic start with Google or Instagram?

Start where patients are already searching. For most treatments that is Google, because the person has a need and wants a clinic near them. Add Instagram or Facebook once enquiries from search are being answered and booked quickly.

Can we target people who have a specific condition?

Write the ad about the service, never about the viewer. Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply a person's health condition, so "Fertility consultations in Ikoyi" works where "Struggling to conceive?" does not.

Do clinic ads on TikTok need approval?

In most markets TikTok lists, medical institutions need proof of approval from the local regulator and an 18+ age restriction. Rules differ by country, so check TikTok's healthcare policy for Nigeria before you spend.

How do we know which channel is working?

Track every enquiry back to its source and record who booked. Compare cost per booking by channel. Views, likes and followers do not pay the clinic's bills.
