Why your clinic isn’t showing on Google Maps (and the fixes)

Unverified, suspended, duplicated or simply outranked: how to find why your clinic is missing from Google Maps, and Google’s own fix for each cause.

By the Kren Agency team ·

When a clinic isn’t showing on Google Maps, the cause is usually an unverified or suspended profile, a name that breaks Google’s rules, a duplicate listing, a wrong category or pin, or a profile too thin to beat nearby clinics. Each has a clear fix. Here is how to find what is hiding your Google Maps business listing.

Patients pick from the clinics they can see. A missing listing never gets the call.

First: is your clinic missing, or just ranked lower?

Sign in to the Google Account that manages your profile, then search Google Maps for your clinic’s name and city.

  • It doesn’t appear, even by name. It’s a status problem: verification, suspension or a duplicate.
  • It appears by name but not for “dentist near me”. It’s a ranking problem: category, pin or reviews.

Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear, and edits can take up to 3 days to show (Google Business Profile Help: find your business on Google).

Is your profile verified?

Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. If your dashboard still asks you to verify, start there.

Google chooses the method. Record any verification video before opening hours, with no patients or records in frame. We cover each method in our post on setting up a Google Business Profile for clinics.

Was the profile suspended?

Google suspends or disables profiles that don’t follow its guidelines, and a suspended profile won’t show to anyone until the issue is resolved. Check for a notice in the Google Account that manages the profile.

  1. Fix the cause first. Google asks that the profile follows all its guidelines before you appeal.
  2. Gather proof. Google lists documents such as business registration, a business licence or utility bills. The name and address on them should match the profile.
  3. Appeal through Google’s appeals tool. Google says an appeal can only be submitted once, so send it complete.

Never open a new profile for the same clinic while you wait. Google tells owners not to.

Fix it, prove it, then appeal once.

Does your clinic name break Google’s rules?

Google’s guidelines for representing your business say the name must not carry taglines, service descriptions or location details, and that extra words in the name can lead to suspension.

  • Breaks the rules: “[Clinic name] Teeth Whitening and Implants Lekki”.
  • Follows them: “[Clinic name]”, exactly as it reads on your signboard.

Doctors who see patients directly may have their own profile. Google says a practitioner shouldn’t have several profiles for different specialties, and support staff shouldn’t have profiles at all.

Is there a duplicate listing?

Google says not to create more than one profile for each location, in one account or several. A second listing, often set up years ago by a former manager, splits your reviews and shows patients two phone numbers.

Search your address and old clinic names on Google Maps. Keep the verified profile that has your reviews, then find out which account controls the other one and remove it from there. Never start a fresh profile to get a clean slate.

Is the category telling Google the wrong thing?

Google asks you to choose the fewest categories that describe your core business, and to pick what the business is, not what it has. A fertility clinic that also does scans is still a fertility clinic. Pick the most specific primary category that matches your clinic, and add extra ones only for real departments.

Is the map pin on the wrong building?

In Lagos and Abuja, estate roads and plot numbers often confuse the map. A pin two streets away sends patients to the wrong gate.

Google’s steps to fix it:

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Location.
  2. Next to Business location, select Edit.
  3. Select Adjust, move the map until the pin sits on your building, then select Done and Save.

Google says changes usually show in about 10 minutes, though some take up to 30 days.

Why do nearby clinics still rank above you?

Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t move closer to every patient, so work on the other two.

  • Complete information. Google says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show in local results. Fill in hours, holiday hours, services and photos.
  • Reviews. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask after good visits and never reward reviews. Our post on getting Google reviews for clinics shows how.
  • No shortcuts. Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

Being found is only half the job

A visible listing brings the call. What happens next decides the booking. A phone that rings out loses the patient the map just sent you. If you are starting from zero, read how to get your clinic on Google Maps in Nigeria first.

Questions clinic owners ask about Google Maps business listings

Why does my clinic show when I search its name but not for “clinic near me”?

The listing exists, but nearby clinics rank higher. Check your category, pin, hours and reviews. Distance also counts.

How long until a new or edited profile shows on Google Maps?

Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear, and edits up to 3 days. Some location changes take up to 30 days.

Can we pay Google to show higher on Maps?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Should we create a new profile if ours is suspended?

No. Google tells owners not to. Fix what broke the guidelines, gather your documents and appeal once.
