Google Ads for clinics in Nigeria: how search ads bring patients
Search ads for clinics: booking keywords, location targeting, Google's healthcare ad rules, landing pages and call tracking, judged by cost per booking.

Google Ads puts your clinic in front of people at the moment they search for a treatment near them. For private clinics in Lagos and Abuja, search ads work when four things line up: keywords with booking intent, tight location targeting, ad text inside Google's healthcare rules, and a page that makes booking easy. Then you judge every campaign by bookings.
Why do Google Ads cost clinics money and bring few bookings?
The usual pattern: a campaign goes live with broad keywords, the whole country as the target area, and ads that send everyone to the home page. Clicks come in. The phone rings with job seekers and people in another city. Nobody tracks which calls came from the ads.
Which keywords bring patients ready to book?
Pick searches that name a treatment and a place, or show the person is choosing a clinic. "Dental implants Lekki", "fertility clinic Abuja" and "ultrasound scan near me" are booking searches. "What causes back pain" is a reading search. It rarely pays as an ad.
Google offers three keyword match types. Its keyword matching options page explains that broad match can show your ad on related searches, phrase match on searches that include your keyword's meaning, and exact match on searches with the same meaning or intent. Exact match gives the most control and reaches the fewest searches.
For a first campaign:
- Start with phrase and exact match on your highest-value treatments.
- Group keywords by treatment, so implants and whitening each get their own ad and page.
- Add negative keywords such as "jobs", "training", "free" and "course", so your ads stay off those searches.
- Read the search terms report every week and add new negatives.

How should a clinic set location targeting?
Target the areas your patients travel from: Lekki, Ikoyi and Victoria Island, say, rather than all of Nigeria.
By default, Google can show ads to people in your area and to people who have shown interest in it, even from abroad. That can suit a fertility clinic whose patients' relatives search from overseas. For a walk-in physiotherapy practice it mostly wastes clicks. In the advanced location options, choose presence only if you want people who are, or regularly are, in your area.

What can clinic ads say under Google's healthcare policy?
Google's Healthcare and medicines policy restricts several kinds of health ads. Three points matter most for private clinics:
- No prescription drug terms in ads, landing pages or keywords, except where local rules allow them.
- No speculative or experimental treatments. Google does not allow ads promoting them.
- Some services need certification or are restricted by location, including telemedicine that involves prescriptions, addiction services and some fertility products.
The policy also says advertisers must follow the local laws of every location they target. In Nigeria that means your profession's own advertising rules apply too: no promised outcomes, no patient details, no exaggerated claims.
Safe ad text names the service, the place and the next step: "Dental implant consultations in Lekki. Meet the dentist and book a time."
Where should the ad send people?
Send each ad to a page about the exact treatment in the ad. Google's Quality Score includes landing page experience, which it describes as "how relevant and useful your landing page is to people who click your ad."
A good clinic landing page has the treatment in the heading, who does it, what the first visit involves, and one clear way to book: call, message or form. Our post on landing pages for clinics covers what to put on that page, and our website conversion work builds them.

How do you track calls and bookings from Google Ads?
Set up conversions for each way a patient reaches you:
- Calls from ads. Google can count calls from call assets and call-only ads as conversions when they last at least a minimum length you choose. This uses Google forwarding numbers, which Google offers only in some countries, so check its list for Nigeria.
- Calls from your website. Track taps on the phone number on your mobile site.
- Booking forms and messages. Count a form sent or a message started as a conversion.
- Bookings themselves. Ask every new patient how they found you and record it.
Then make sure someone answers. An ad that rings an empty front desk is money gone.

How do you read cost per booking?
Cost per click tells you little. The number that matters is cost per booking: ad spend for a period divided by the patients from Google Ads who booked in that period.
Work it out per treatment. Implants may cost more per booking than check-ups and still pay far better. Compare that cost with what a booked patient is worth to the clinic, then move money towards the treatments and areas that book, and pause what does not.

Questions clinic owners ask about Google Ads
Do Google Ads work for clinics in Nigeria?
They work when people search for your treatments in your area and your clinic answers fast. Keywords with booking intent, tight location targeting and a matching landing page decide most of the result. Track bookings to know.
Can a clinic advertise prescription medicines on Google?
No. Google's Healthcare and medicines policy restricts prescription drug terms in ads, landing pages and keywords, except where local rules allow them. Advertise the consultation or procedure instead.
How is Google Ads different from our Google Business Profile?
Your Google Business Profile is your clinic's listing on Google Maps and Search. Google Ads are paid placements you control by keyword, area and budget. Most clinics need both.
